I’ve experimented with painting a lot. With painting shapes, forms, abstracts, reality, patterns, landscapes, human figures, and much more. I think I’ve probably done somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 paintings by now, probably closer to 450. I never went to a school to learn how to paint. I had a mentor, William Vanya, who guided me in his variable styles, but the way I learned was basically sink or swim; paintings that were good were kept (not many early on) and paintings that were bad discarded. With no formal training regimen such as a syllabus, it was basically a wild goose chase on the hunt for good form and visual aesthetic. Early on it was hard for me to recognize when a painting was finished, and especially hard to recognize good deconstructivist pieces. There were great paintings that were painted over or destroyed without the sense to protect them from my untrained eye.
